Nov. 21st, 2003 11:45 pmLast week, the leader of one of our close political, if not sporting, allies slipped through London barely noticed. John Howard, the Prime Minister of Australia, had come for a quiet chat with Tony Blair and a long pep talk with the new shadow cabinet. The man who took decades to be elected, before winning three elections in a row, had some advice. Looking around the room, he asked the Tories whether they enjoyed their jobs. They all put up their hands. "You shouldn't," he told them. "You should loathe them, despise them. You should be deeply dissatisfied. You are only in the shadow cabinet. Until you're desperate to be in Government you'll never make it."
