men who have similarly tweaked their appearance in order not to unsettle
fellow-travellers. Elton Ali, from Bermondsey, writes: "I've taken to carrying a
bottle of wine as if I'm carrying it home for dinner. I don't even like wine,
but it's a visual symbol that says I'm not a fanatic Islamic bomber." One Mr
Khatri, also from London, tries to ignore the hostile stares by immersing
himself in Sudoku puzzles. And Marcus, whose family is Greek-Cypriot but who has
experienced suspicious glances because of his tanned skin, apparently makes a
point of overtly reading The Economist.
